History
Kyiv University for Transport Economy and Technologies is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in Ukraine. Its history dates back to 1898 when Kyiv Polytechnics started training of railway engineers. The first graduation ceremony took place in 1903 with twelve newly-fledged engineers with qualification in “Railways” and one – in “Bridges”. Moreover, a new railway department was established within Kyiv Commercial Institute in 1909. In 1929 Ukrainian people’s commissariat of Education established Kyiv Means of Communication Institute consisting of 5 faculties. One year later this Institute was reorganized. As to the USSR Soviet of People’s Commissars Decree № 19/672 five new independent railway educational institutions were established. They were Kyiv Railway Institute (consisting of 2 faculties), Dnipropetrovsk Railway Institute (3 faculties), Kyiv Institute of River Transport (3 faculties), Odesa Institute of Sea Transport (3 faculties) and Kharkiv Transport Institute (4 faculties). During the period of mass repressions in 1930ies a number of higher educational establishments were shut down and Kyiv Railway Institute was one of them. It was not until July, 16 1966 that the Institute was renewed as a branch of Kharkiv Institute for Railway Engineers. With the establishment of Ukrzaliznytsya in 1991 the need for high-skilled railway engineers was constantly growing. That resulted in establishment of Kyiv Institute for Railway Transport on December, 5 1995.
Kyiv University for Transport Economy and Technologies became a self-governing and independent structure according to the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers’ Decree № 983 “About foundation of Kyiv University for Transport Economy and Technologies”. Before that it existed as a Kyiv branch of Kharkiv Institute for Railway Engineers ( USSR Means of Communication Ministry Decree Е-16323) and Kiyv Railway Institute within Kharkiv Railway Trasport Academy (Kharkiv Railway Trasport Academy Decree №53).
Being tightly connected with Ukrzaliznytsya and the Ministry of Transport, the University has an excellent opportunity to introduce modern educational innovations and to constantly raise the professional level of its graduates. Due to its situation in the capital of Ukraine close to the railway authorities, the University has the best staff including professionals from Ukrzaliznytsya, the Ministry of Transport and various transport organizations and makes a major contribution to students job placement. The advanced studies faculty provides advanced training for railway managers of all levels including Ukrzaliznytsya’s top managers.
